Fitted Window Blinds
So it’s time to decorate your new home or update your current one. One of the first steps you need to do is measure your windows to be sure you purchase window coverings that fit your window and your design strategy perfectly. Here we will go over how exactly to measure for your fitted blinds, and what factors you’ll need to consider.

Measuring for Fitted Blinds
There are two factors that you will want to consider when measuring for fitted window blinds.
1. Your window type
2. Type of blinds
Window Type
Most windows are set at a slight indent when compared to the wall – this is known as a recess. If your window is recessed more than 60mm, you are able to have fitted window blinds hang either inside the recess or outside. Hanging fitted blinds on the inside of the recess creates a seamless look and feel, allowing your blinds to tuck right into the recess. This gives your room a more spacious feel.
Another window type are those that are not recessed but flush with the wall. Here you will be hanging your fitted blinds directly on the wall. You may even find that you have a recessed window that opens inwards, or are recessed less than 60mm. Here you will also want to hang your blinds on the outside to allow your window to easily open and close when the blinds are drawn back.
While most windows are traditional in shape and size, some homes have other types of windows that require a more specialized fitting. These include bay windows, decorative windows, and half moon arches. If you have one of these more complicated window types, at The Blind Source we have specialists that can help you with the best measuring techniques for your specific circumstance.
Type of Blinds
Most blinds are pretty standard, such as duette and matchstick blinds. When measuring your window for these types of fitted blinds, follow these simple steps:
1. Grab a tape measure and something to write with.
2. If hanging in a window recess: measure the width inside your window at the top, middle, and bottom. Take the smallest of the three and that is the exact width for your fitted window blinds.
3. If hanging outside of a recess or against the wall: Measure the width of your window frame at the top, middle, and bottom. Add 120mm to the largest measurement and that is the width for your fitted blinds.
4. For both recessed and non-recessed windows, measure the exact window height at the left, middle, and right. Use the longest measurement for your fitted window blind length.
Blinds that must be measured differently include roll up blinds, vista blinds, and day night blinds. For these, please contact us and we can help you with the best way to measure.
