How to Properly Measure Blinds
If you are looking to replace or add blinds to your New York City home, you might be asking yourself, ‘how to measure windows for blinds?’ This informative blog is meant to be a brief guide on how measuring windows for blinds is more straightforward than you might think.
How To Measure For Blinds?
Inside Mount
Having your blinds mounted on the inside of your window frame provides a classic clean look for all to see. This look highlights the actual size of your window, whereas other mounts accentuate the window to make it look larger than it is. With the inside mount, the window molding will be visible and the window casing will need to have enough depth to accommodate the headrail running across the window at the top.
Step One: Measure Window Width
Here is a step-by-step guide for how to measure your windows for inside mounted blinds. To ensure the utmost accuracy, you will need to round the narrowest of the three measurements to the closest eighth of an inch as this will be the ultimate measurement for the blind’s width. Remember to never round-up as this will cause an ill-fitting window treatment.
Step Two: Measure Window Height
The window height will also need to be measured in three places: left, center, and right. They will have to be taken on the inside of the frame and just as with the width, the height measurement should be rounded to the nearest eighth of an inch. Use the largest measurement that should be used for the length measurement.
Step 3: Measure Window Depth
Because most blinds come with minimum depth requirements, measuring the depth is extremely important. If the window isn’t wide enough and doesn’t meet depth requirements, you will have to go with an outside mount blind instead.
Outside Mount
As said before, an outside mounted window creates the illusion of a bigger window and can help make windows look better than they actually are. With an outside mount, the blind can be put on the window molding itself or above and beyond it. Outside mounts offer superior light and privacy control than their inside mount counterparts.
Step One: Measure Width of Area To Cover
An outside mount has more flexibility than inside mounts, so you have more options of where you can measure from. You can stop on the edge of your window or spread out wider to make the window look much bigger than it actually is. If you’re looking to maximize the function of your blinds, it’s advisable to allow for at least 3-4 inches to the measurement to provide privacy and light control.
Step Two: Measure Height of Area To Cover
A height measurement can also depend on how much space you want to be covered. If there is a sill, measure to the top of it, but if there isn’t one, the length is up to you! There is no need to measure the depth because the blinds hand outside of the frame.
